18th Annual Rabbi Morris D. Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture

Rabbi Morris D. Rosenblatt was the beloved rabbi of Congregation Kneseth Israel from 1945 until his retirement in 1983.  He died suddenly in June 1985.  Each year, there is a lecture at the synagogue at around the time of his yahrzeit featuring prominent keynote speakers.  This year's guest speaker was David Makovsky, the former editor of the Jerusalem Post and an expert on the Middle East.  Mr. Makovsky is a senior fellow at The Washington Institute and is a director of the Institute's Project on America, Israel, and the Peace Process.  He has appeared frequently on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer (PBS), ABC News, CNN, BBC, and NPR.

Bat Mitzvah of Leah Sturgis

Above:  The happy Bat Mitzvah girl Leah, poses with proud parents Barry and Marsha Sturgis.  Leah led a beautiful service, comprised of many popular and important prayers said daily in the siddur, and chanted the Haftorah for parsha Eikev (Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3).  Leah, her parents, brother Elliott, and sister Rachael attend services each Shabbos.

Micah Halpern Nosh & Lecture

Annapolis native Micah D. Halpern, well-known social and political commentator, lecturer, historian, and syndicated columnist from Jerusalem, spoke at the "Nosh and Lecture".  

He spoke about his new book, "What You Need to Know About: Terror", which has received national attention.  Micah Halpern's book is available on both Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.com Web sites for only $9.95.

 

 

Annapolis Jewish Festival

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Severna Park High School, the United Jewish Council of Anne Arundel County hosted the 8th Annapolis Jewish Festival.  The festival was chaired by Kneseth Israel member and Board of Governors member Jody Goldsmith.  Over 2,000 attended the event, which featured Kosher food, Judaica crafts and artwork, a klezmer band, and well-known pianist Jon Simon.

Activities for the children:  Benjamin and Kimberly Anisman with their father David getting ready for a sack race.  Apple bobbing was very popular with the children. 

Hard at Work:  Kneseth Israel President Lore Singerman and Libby Monias help with the kitchen cleanup.  At right is the synagogue's maintenance maven, Edward "Homie" Henriques puts the finishing touches on the refurbishing of the Israel and Srah Legum chapel.  The refurbishing of the chapel was a major Sisterhood project this past year.

Israeli Dancing at Congregation Kneseth Israel

Israeli dancing debuted at Congregation Kneseth Israel on Sunday, October 26, led by Ethan Halpern.  The group meets each Sunday night from 6:30PM until 8:00PM, costing only $5.00 per adult and $1.00 for children under 13 per evening.

At left is Ytta Carr and her brother Ethan Halpern who is the leader of the popular Israeli dance program at Congregation Kneseth Israel.  The weekly group is made up of various families, singles, and people of all ages.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cortnee Doll Bat Mitzvah

Cortnee Doll, daughter of Rachelle and Larry Doll, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on Saturday night, November 15, 2003.  Cortnee is a graduate of the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School and attends the Beth Tfiloh Jewish Day School in Baltimore.

Cortnee wrote a beautiful poem about Rabbi Weisblum, titled "My Rabbi".  Please click here to read it (Word Document).  This poem was published in a journal in her school. 

Dr. Noah Feldman Nosh & Lecture

November 23, 2003

Dr. Noah Feldman, NYU Law Professor and author of "After Jihad: America and the Struggle for Islamic Democracy", appeared at Congregation Kneseth Israel for a "Nosh & Lecture".  Dr. Feldman is the grandson of long-time members Ruth and Philip Deckelbaum of Annapolis. Dr. Feldman was appointed chief U.S. adviser to Iraq for the writing of its new constitution.  His lecture was "The Future of Democracy in the Middle East".  A nice turnout of 125 attended the event.

Family Chanukah Dinner
